Famous as the largest art gallery of the world Museo del Prado is a museum and art gallery of Spain located in the capital of Spain, Madrid. The museum boasts one of the best collections of European Art starting from 12th-century till the early 19th-century. The history of Museo del Prado dates back to the reign of Charles III as he tried to assemble all art collections under one single roof. But the process took sometime and during the reign of Fernando VII the Royal Museum of Painting and Sculpture was created in November 1819. The death of the king brought with it some inheritance problems that jeopardized the unity of collection. But very soon the monarchy of Spain ceased to exist and the museum became a national property. Then it was called Prado national Museum. Since then, the museum has faced problems as it was transferred many times during the Spanish Civil War till it reached the Swiss city of Geneva. Till the outbreak of Second World War, the museum remained in the hands of foreigners. But after the war the property of Spain was returned to Madrid.
