Climate of Spain

The primary beauty of Spain lies in its natural splendor, the coasts and mountains, plateaus and highlands, offering fabulous tourism opportunities through out the year. This accounts for influx of tourists from the hotter regions of the world to get to Spain during summer and those from the colder come to Spain primarily during the winter time in Spain. But Spain can be visited, in general, at any time of the year, as the climate of Spain determines that you have incredible holiday all through the year. But before you visit this land of the bull fighters and authentic Spanish cuisine and fiestas, it is recommended that you build you knowledge about the climate of Spain, as this will assist you in determining, exactly which time of the year you would like to get to Spain for your vacations.

The climate of Spain is primarily determined by its geographical location; much as the climate in any other country, but seldom will you find a nation with such diversity in climate. This is because of the fact that, Spain is surrounded by water bodies on most of its sides, except on the north and north east, bounded by mountain ranges of Pyrenees and Sierra Nevada. Accordingly, the climate of Spain varies from one part of the nation the other, with the inland having extremes of climates, the coastal regions with moderate but humid climate and the northern with comfortable cool climates in the summer and freezing temperatures in the winter.

The tourism in Spain has gone a long way in determining the importance of the nation in the tourist circuit of the world, so much so, that it has made Spain a sought after vacation destination in the tourist lexicon. Spain enjoys usually round the year, three different types of climates, depending on the region and its surroundings. It has continental climate around the mid-area of the nation with temperatures rising to 30°C in summer and dropping below 10°C in winter; Mediterranean climate in the coastal region with sunny and cool climates both in the summer and winter; and Oceanic climate in Galicia and the coastal area of the Bay of Biscay, with heavy rainfalls. Summers in the city are often quite hot with the scorching sun shining bright and the winters, especially in the months of December, January and February have freezing temperatures.

The cities of Valladolid on the northern meseta and Zaragoza in the Ebro basin, recieve very little rainfall but the meseta faces cold climate in winter. The Pyrenees range and Cordilera Cantábrica are responsible for very heavy rainfall and moderate climate in the northern regions especially in the city of A Coruña. The city of Madrid faces extremes of climates which turns unbearably hot in the summer and extremely cold in winter but Barcelona enjoys complete coastal climate with mild temperatures throughout the year. It is therefore, usually recommended to visit Spain in the months of April through November, but in July and August, the climate can get really hot.
