Tourism in world heritage city Avila, Spain

Avila is a spectacular walled town, situated at a very short distance from Madrid, the capital city of Spain. It is a world heritage city which had been held sacred by the Celtiberians long before its conquests by the Romans, Moors or the Christians. The city was captured by the moors in 714 AD and had been recaptured y the Christians in 1088. The massive stone walls were built in the 12th century. These walls extend for 2500 meters and encircle the entire old city of Avila. Eighty eight heavily fortified stone towers form an integral component of the great wall. The present town of Avila is the capital of the province of Avila. The great walls of Avila conceal within itself a town which is probably the best remnant of the bygone medieval era. With impending churches and buildings of the Renaissance, Avila seems to be a town straight out of the legends and stories of the golden days of Europe. Avila is a city of contrasts from the bustling Mercado or markets to the serene churches and temples. The majestic palaces to the imposing cathedrals, the spirit of Avila comes alive through these architectural splendors.

Avila also has a strange sense of mysticism mingled in its air. The birthplace of Santa Teresa De Jesus, the old as well as the new city has many religious buildings. The gastronomical assets of Avila are as much famous as its religious buildings. The veal T-bone steak and excellent roasts make up few of the delicacies of the region. The delicious “yemas de Santa Teresa” and a horde of cakes and pastries are sure to treat your sweet tooth.
