Tourism in world heritage city Caceres, Spain |
The city of Caceres, is the capital of the province by the same name, situated in Extremadura, Spain. The vicinity of the city had been inhabited since the prehistoric times. The proof of prehistoric life near Caceres can be found in the paintings of the caves of Maltravieso and ElConejar. These paintings belong to the Paleolithic age. The present city had been founded by the Romans in 25 BC.
The old town of Caceres or the Ciudad Monumental still has the remnants of the ancient walls. The walls conceal the modern town thriving inside it, instead it gives the impression of a typical medieval setting. Caceres was declared to be a world heritage city by UNESCO in 1986 because of the quaint blend of the Roman, Islamic, northern Gothic and Renaissance styles in the city's architecture as well as its culture. The culmination of all these styles is due to the multiple invasions that this ancient city had faced; thirty grand towers, reminiscent of the Muslim era still stand tall in the heart of Caceres. Caceres is also famous for the Universidad de Extremadura, and two astronomical observatories it houses. The history of this city is closely linked to few famous peninsular routes which include the Silver Route, a Roman road connecting Seville with Astorgs. The gastronomical tradition of this city is a rich mixture of the several cultures that had influences on every other aspect of this beautiful city.
