National Museum of Art of Catalunya MNAC



The National Museum of Art of Catalunya MNAC is know to be housed in the former 'Palau Nacional' which is located at the foot of Montjuic and it's regarded as the best Art Museum in Barcelona. This museum displays an enormous collection of Medieval Art forms starting right from the Romanesque and Gothic periods. In fact a number of murals and paintings were collected from the Roman churches of the nearby villages. These murals are at the same time complemented with sculptures, wood carvings and other pieces collected from the churches. This museum has recently added a segment which is dedicated to Picasso and is still on expansion. The museum displays the following types of art forms:

The Romanesque works: the wall-paintings of Romanesque churches in and around Catalonia.

Gothic art: the 13th-15th century's Catalan art along with Italian art.

Renaissance and Baroque art: art from the 16th-18th century's Spanish, Italian and Flemish nature.

Modern art: the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century Catalan art having photography and the decorative arts. Notable works are, Ramon Casas, Santiago Rusiñol, Isidre Nonell, Pau Gargallo and the modernist decorative arts of Antoni Gaudí.

Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection: works deposited by the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. It includes pieces from the Renaissance and Baroque and a collection of Catalan art belonging to the Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection.

Photography collection: photographs from the 19th century to mid-1990s.

Numismatics collection: displays Coins, medals and paper money from 6th century B.C to present day.
