Parc Güell |
The beautiful architectural product of Parc Güell designed by architect Antoni Gaudí is one of the few tourist destinations Barcelona can boast of. This park is located on the hill of el Carmel in the Gràcia district of Barcelona. It was built in the years between 1900to 1914 and nowadays it's a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Works of Antoni Gaudí. This project was originally a part of the commercially unsuccessful housing site named after Count Eusebi de Güell. Actually the English garden city movement inspired the construction of this park and since then it has been converted into a municipal garden. One can reach this destination by underground railway, by city buses and lastly by commercial tourist buses. You can enjoy free entry to this beautiful park but Gaudi's house, la Torre Rosa in which the furniture are designed by him can be visited only with entry fees and those wishing to visit the both Park Güell and the Sagrada Familia can enter at a nominal fee. One mustn't miss out on the multicolored mosaic dragon fountain and mosaic work on the main terrace by Gaudi. Simultaneously the buildings at the entrance also tend to fit in well with the rest of the park's architecture and designing. The main entrance of the park is the focal point for most tourists as it's surrounded by a long bench which is in the form of a sea serpent and a number of enclaves are formed by the curves of the serpent bench. Many motifs of Catalan nationalism were used by Gaudi including the elements from religious mysticism and ancient poetry. Originally the visitors used to be greeted by two life-size mechanical gazelles which were later lost in the upheaval of the war.
Gaudi also designed the roadways around the park as structures protruding from the steep hillside with separate footpaths formed under these structures. The roads were designed using local stone in a way as to integrate them into landscapes. Most of the structures designed by Gaudi in this Parc Güell represent natural forms having column like tree trunks which support branching vaulting under the roadway and the curves of vaulting and alignment of sloping columns designed as to look like an inverted catenary arch shapes forming perfect compression structures. The Park's high point has a large cross and the point offers a complete view of Barcelona and the bay. One can also enjoy the views of the main city in panorama, with the Sagrada Família and the Montjuïc area at a distance.
